Specialist Insurance

Retail

Specialist cover for New Zealand retail businesses from boutique stores and gift shops to hardware and fashion retailers.

What you need to know

From boutique stores and specialty retailers through to large retail chains, we understand the pressures this sector creates. Managing stock levels, seasonal peaks, customer foot traffic, staff turnover, and lease obligations all combine to produce an insurance profile that generic commercial packages rarely address well and the consequences of getting it wrong can be significant.

Theft, water damage, a supplier dispute, an employment claim, or a forced closure can each generate serious costs quickly. We structure insurance programmes that reflect how your retail business operates, and we go to market on your behalf to make sure the cover responds when it needs to.

What we help with

A comprehensive retail insurance programme, structured to protect your premises, fitout, and stock against damage and theft, with public liability and business interruption cover — ensuring that a single incident on your shop floor never becomes a threat to the business you have worked hard to build.

What's generally covered

Material Damage & Stock

Covers stock, shop fit-out, fixtures, and equipment for fire, water damage, storm, and other insured events. Stock cover should reflect peak inventory levels particularly for seasonal retailers to avoid underinsurance at the worst possible time.

Business Interruption

If your store is forced to close following an insured event, business interruption cover replaces lost revenue and covers ongoing fixed costs rent, wages, loan repayments while you get back on your feet. The indemnity period should reflect how long a realistic rebuild or refit would take.

Public Liability

Covers legal liability for bodily injury or property damage to customers, delivery staff, or members of the public while on your premises or as a result of your products. Any retail business with customer foot traffic should carry adequate public liability limits.

Employers Liability

Covers legal liability to employees for work-related injury or illness not covered by ACC. Essential for any retail business with paid staff, including part-time and casual workers.

Management Liability

Retail businesses carry meaningful employment risk particularly around dismissal, restructuring, and disputes over hours, pay, or conditions. Management liability cover protects business owners and managers against personal liability arising from employment-related claims, including unjustified dismissal, discrimination, and breaches of the Employment Relations Act. Given the high turnover and part-time workforce common across retail, this is a cover that is frequently overlooked and regularly needed.

Statutory Liability

Covers defence costs for regulatory proceedings under statutes including the Consumer Guarantees Act and Fair Trading Act, along with any insurable fines or reparation costs ordered by the Courts. Fines imposed under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015, Employment Relations Act 2000, or any legislation where indemnification is prohibited by law are not covered.

Goods in Transit & Marine Cargo

Covers stock while it is being transported whether from a supplier, between locations, or for delivery to customers. Particularly important for retailers who import product or run regular deliveries, where goods may not be covered by the supplier's insurance once dispatched.
